I really want to start doing some cool road trips this year and I have roughly a few weeks from school ending to summer classes starting. I want to take a few days and do this trip:
I feel like going Knoxville, Nashville, Memphis, Jackson, New Orleans, Mobile, Atlanta and back to Boone will give me enough experience to say that I’ve conquered the South east. I’ve been to South Carolina, East Georgia and Florida before, but never the deep deep South. This way I can knock out a whole region in a few days and not have to worry about revisiting these states later when I continue my quest to visit every continental US state by car.
Any cool places to stop in these states?

LANE MOTOR MUSEUM IN NASHVEGAS IS A MUST. Also Corvette factory/museum is only about an hour away from Nashville and well worth the drive. Nothing worth your while here in Memphis besides the Commissary, Central BBQ, and a few cars in a parking garage. Atlanta is great, and there's a few cool museums in east TN and a fairly big car museum in Tupelo, MS

I feel like Asheville should be on your route rather than Charlotte(ish). Though you’re close enough maybe it not a big deal.

Yeah, I’ve been to Asheville plenty. Love it there. Would probobally end up there anyway.

Unfortunately there is next to nothing on I-55. However, since I live in MS, I will happily share some things with you.
Tupelo is on the other side of the state and would be a good bit out of the way, but may be worth the drive depending on what you are into. It is the only city in the state that has a car museum as far as I know and of course there’s that famous singer who was born there.
Batesville is home to South Panola High School, affectionately known as The Univeristy of South Panola since they have won the State championship 11 times and holds the third longest winning streak in the nation. Batesville also has a casket company. What’s funny is that Batesville Casket is actually based out of Bateville, IN, but has a plant in Batesville, MS.
There isn’t anything in Grenada unless you need to stop for gas.
At the Winona exit if you go west past Greenwood there is a place called Berclair. This community is where BB King was born.
Jackson recently got the state’s only exotic car dealership. It’s called Motorcars of Jackson and is right of the interstate. Depending on what time you go through and if you like Italian, there is a great restaurant called Amerigo. It isn’t far from the interstate. I recommend trying the cheese fritters. Holy crap they are good. Aside from that, Jackson is not anything special.
The next couple of places are Brookhaven and McComb. These are also mainly just places to stop for gas.
Coming across the coast I would at least recommend getting off the interstate and taking a drive down Highway 90. The water isn’t anything great but it is amazing to see how much the coast has bounced back since Hurricane Katrina. There are also several great places to eat so feel free to ask and I can help you out. The coast is also home to the third largest group of Casinos if I remember right.
So there’s Mississippi for you. At least for the direction you are going. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask and I can give you my email. I live about an hour north of the coast and could definitely try to head down and meet.

I did a similar trip in 2014 - From that, if you don’t mind a couple suggestions - Pensacola and Pensacola Beach for the Blue Angels and National Aviation Museum, and if you are so inclined, going south when passing on Nashville for the Jack Daniels distillery is also a nice half day attraction

Birmingham would be worth a stop, I think. The Barber Motorsports Park and Vintage Motorcycle Museum (where the Indycar race is today) is great, and had the largest collection of motorcycles in that world. 5-6 stories full of cool machinery.
Birmingham also has an excellent food and beer scene. Saw’s BBQ is the best barbeque that I have had ( http://www.sawsbbq.com ) and Slice ( http://www.slicebirmingham.com ) has some seriously great pizza. It also serves a lot of the local beer. I’m fond of Good People, but Cahaba and Avondale are also good. Ton of other excellent restaurants too.
You could also see if there are any good concerts in town around your timetable, as Iron City, Saturn, and Workplay all are neat smaller venues.

There is literally nothing in the part of Alabama you have yourself driving through on your map until Mobile. Montgomery is worthless. Birmingham would make a good stop if you have the time.

In Mobile there are some excellent seafood/oyster restaurants (plus a nice breakfast spot in Daphne here are my favorites (Plus the Battleship Alabama and museum):

Also consider a detour through Asheville, NC since you’re going to be near there.
Nola is awesome if you’ve never been but forget trying to get beignets and coffee on the weekends at

the line stretches for a mile. Visit the

if you get a chance.

As aebome said, Birmingham is a great stop if you’re touring the south. You won’t find anything in Montgomery, it’s a bland, boring place.

You’ll be driving right by the BMW plant in Greer, SC on I-85. They’ve got a museum and I believe the offer tours as well.
